Task 1:
Have a listen to the speech packages above and match each one with a genre, from the list below.
You should also comment on the audience reach; Local, Regional, National, International.(P1, M1, D1)
Speech packages can be split up in to certain genres, such as:
Consumer- price increase of products or service Business- Company, administration, stocks and shares,
Lifestyle- Health and beauty,
Sport- Results and reviews,
News and current affairs- Bulletins, obituary and in depth reports and
Audience- local, regional, national and international.
heres a few speech packages that i listened to and put in to genres: The first speech package:
It is a pod-cast about the Olympics so I feel it would fit in the genre of news and current affairs. Its audience reach would be national, as the BBC aire all over England and many people will want to hear about the Olympics, due to the fact it’s such a big event and England take part in it.
The second speech package:This is also a pod-cast and fits in the genre of business as the show is called business daily. I feel the audience reach would again be national as the BBC made it.
The last speech package:
This speech package is again a pod-cast and fits in the genre sport the show is called five live football daily and it talks about future matches and ones that have just occurred.
Task 2: Have a look at the topics below and decide which genre, each issue would belong to and what the reach and target audience might be.(P1, M1, D1)
what topic suits what genre?
1) The Olympics- 2012
2) Alcohol Price Rise - Risen for safety
3) Asda- Where do they stand in the supermarket league tables?
4) West Leeds Council owned gyms- comparisons to national gym chains.
5) Smoking Ban - Have the pubs and clubs suffered? What else has the ban affected?
Leeds UTD - History, administration, what's been happening
I feel the topic “Olympics- 2012” would fit in to two genres. It would fit in to sport, News, and current affairs, as it is news about future events. The audience reach could be international as not just the Uk will want to talk about the next Olympics other countries will want to hear any news about it as well. I think it has a primary target audience of 20+ as many people will be interested in the London Olympics. I fell it will have a se
condar
y target audience of young people/teens as they might want to do something in the Olympics and will want to keep up with news on it.
The topic “alcohol price rise - risen for safety” fits in to the genre of consumer as it’s about how prices have risen on alcohol. The audience reach of this would be national as people buy alcohol all over England so the topic would be aired all over so everyone can find out. The target audience would be people that drink and alcoholics so I feel the age would be 18+.
The topic “ASDA- Where do they stand in the supermarket league tables?” would fall in to the genre consumer as it is about ASDA’s services. The reach of this issue would be national as many people use ASDA and there are ASDA shops all over England so many people will want to know about it.
The target audience would be 18+ women as they stereotypically go shopping for food for their family or if they are students at university.
The topic “West Leeds Council owned gyms- comparisons to national gym chains” fits in the genre’s lifestyle and sport as gyms are about health and you do sport there. The audience reach would be regional to west Leeds as it is only about gyms in that area so there would not be a
ny point putting it nationally. The Primary target audience will be the people who use the gyms as they will want to know more than someone who doesn’t use a gym. The secondary target audience would be people wanting to join gyms, as they will want to know if Leeds council owned gyms are better than national ones.
The topic “Smoking Ban - Have the pubs and clubs suffered? What else has the ban affected?” would be in the genre of business, as pubs/clubs are businesses. The reach would be national as smoking was banned all over England. The target audience would be people who smoke or who gave up smoking
.
The topic “Leeds UTD - History, administration, what has been happening lately.” Falls in to the genre of sport as Leeds UTD are a football club. The audience reach would be regional as mainly people who live in Leeds will be interested, as they will support them. The target audience will be 14+ as young and old people are interested in football. I also feel it would be aimed mainly at men, as they
stereotypically are more interested in football than women are.

Task 3:
Decide on a topic for your speech package, you can choose one of the titles above if you wish.(P1, M1, D1)
My speech package
I have chosen to do my speech package on how there is not any big music venues in Leeds. The genre of my speech package is news and current affairs and is aimed at primarily at teens who go to concerts and people who like music. I will gather information on my chosen subject through the
internet and interviews.
task 5: Have a listen to the news speech package which is broadcast via this link
and below and answer the following questions.....(P1, M1, D1)
Who is interviewed and why?
Hipa de wood is interviewed talking about Iraq and some movements that she is against. The next interviewer is Terry Clemetson who is talking about dams collapsing and how they affect nature and fisherman. From a studio in California. Natalia vianna is being interviewed on how a fire has burnt through a national park in brazil.
Are there any other contributors or correspondents?
Jill Burns is the reporter. Leaf hilmon from a tribe who thinks dam removal is the only option. John de voe
Are the interviews as-live, or pre-recorded and are they recorded on location, via the telephone or in a studio?
The interview with Hipa de wood is pre recorded in a studio as-live.
Leaf himon and john de voe are both interviewed by Terry Clemetson over the phone and are pre recorded.
Task 6:
Think about your chosen topic and identify the interview materials you will require to produce your speech package:(P1, M1, D1)
For my speech package I will interview a local band manager on how he feels about the new venue and how he thinks it will effect leeds. I will also interview other correspondents and contributors by asking my target audience how they
feel on the subject. I will use vox pops of people’s favorite bands at the beginning of the speech package to create an enigma and keep the listener tuned. I will record my vox pops. on location to get interviews form other
correspondents. Connotations of the genre I have chosen are:
Music beds to anchor the theme of music,
Voice over the music bed,
Interviews,
Facts and figures.
Task 7:
Create a short report focusing on a variety of Rad
io Stations that broadcast speech packages and provide the relevant information for each station...(P2, M2, D2)My short report is on radio 4.
Radio 4 is a public service broadcaster and is funded by the T.V license. It is 100% speech . it has a target audience of over 30's and it is a national radio station. You can listen to radio 4 through the internet, where you can download pod-casts to your mp3 player or i-pod or just listen online. It is available on analogue and digital. The content of radio 4 is generally formal due to the target audience which will stereotypically want news and bulletins not music run downs and informal charts. This station broadcasts a range of spoken programmes and drama. The speech package's used on this station are formal and on topics like news, sport and history rather than on music.
Radio aire is a independant radio station, local to Leeds and West Yorkshire. This station is more informal than Radio 4 playing chart music and having young presenters to appeal more to the target audience, being young people. The speech packages used on this station are generally on things that station thinks will interest the audience, such as on music or bands or drinking. Again this station can be both accesed through the internet and over the radio. This commercial radio station fousus' mainly on the genre's of music and entertainment as this is what the audience likes. You can listen to some of the speech packages as podcasts like an recent one about politics.
Radio 5 is annother BBC run radio station so is a public service broadcaster run through the T.V licence. This station has a primary target audience of adults over the age of 20 so is has a formal tone unlike radio aire. This station specialises in the genre of sport but a few others are covered such as lifestyles. Since this station is 100% speech, there are a lot of speech packages included that talk about sports and other topics. You can dowload the speech pakages off the internet to listen to just like both other stations. The fact that all stations have the option of listening online and dowloading podcasts, anchors how prominent internet has become in today's society and how the radio has to do many things to compeate with T.V.
Task 8:
Write a treatment for your speech package, use the template below as a guide to your headings...(P2, M2, D2)
Genre: audience and news and current affairs
Date:
Duration: 2-3 min
Voices: mine as the interviewer a councillor and young energetic people to keep the package informatiycical but lively and upbeat. I will use both male and female to
avoid being bias or sexist but I won’t use low pitch, the voices will have texture and cadence. The accent will be yorkshire/ Leeds as that’s the area that will be involved in my speech package and the area listening to my package.
Actuality/ambience: Music: upbeat different genres to signify how many bands could come to Leeds and play for their fans. during the interview i will use softer music to make this part of the spee
ch package sound more serious and also so the listener will concentrate more on the speech than the background music.
Sound Fx: none needed
Silence:i don’t think silence would be appropriate for my speech package due to the topic of music venues, so i am going to use a music bed throughout my piece, but i will change the tempo a
nd style of music to create a different atmosphere and also make it more lively and not sound the same.
additional notes:
My speech package will be informational but casual to suit the preferences of my target audience of teens/music lovers. The social position of my target audience is wide, as teens don’t get money unless they work and not all of them do. In my speech package I wont stereotype by just including one genre of music typical to a certain group of people like: emo, goth, punk, mosher or chav, I will use a variety of music types. I don’t feel that gender plays a role in what music type you like it’s more on what genre you like. Texts are different as som
e magazines appeal to females some to men depending on content. Age I feel does make a difference as young people prefer different music to older generations as they are more mature. A family audience is where a show is aimed at a whole family and aims for the whole family to listen together. People don’t really listen to the radio as a family anymore they will use the internet or listen on their own. I think that the class your in does sometimes
effect what station you listen to, but people will want to hear their favorite bands or hear news whatever station its on.
script for my Speech package:
Opening
People shouting out their favorite bands (vox pops) This will have music playing in the background of the genre rock, to suit the topic of venues.
Joof: blue-sky project
Claire: you me at six
Simon slipknot
Dot: disturbed
James: bon jovi
Stef: fall out boy
Kam: pussycat dolls
Heva: Elliot minor
me: Green day
Me:
these are just a few of people’s favourite bands. Living in Leeds we are lucky if our favourite bands pay a visit to our small venues. The academy opened by the Kaiser chief’s on the 9th September 2008 and its the biggest venue we have to date and has a capacity of 2700, but this is nothing compared to Manchester’s MEN that can hold 19000.
Simon and kam have both missed out on their favourite bands coming to Leeds, as they wanted to play at the bigger venues such as Sheffield and Manchester. Kam has to travel to Manchester to see the pussycat dolls and Simon is missing out on seeing his favourite band slipknot, as he is unable to travel to see them.
I will play a interview i held with two of my peers.
Georgie: hi Simon, hi kam
Simon and kam: hi
Georgie: can you tell me all the big bands you haven’t seen, as they have not played in Leeds?
Kam: lists bands
Simon: lists bands.
Georgie: so how do you feel about slipknot and the pussycat dolls playing in numerous big venues except Leeds academy?
Simon:its just a big inconvenience to have to travel a long way there and then rush back to make sure you catch a train on time.
Kam: it just takes a lot of effort to get to these places and if you don't know where they are you have to try and find them. It could be dangerous late at night too.
Georgie: We are having a new venue built that can hold 12,500 do you think this is big enough and will it make more bands play in Leeds?
Kam: yes i do becouse they would have a bigger audience, sell more tickets and make more profit from this.
Simon: A bigger venue means more promotion for the band and more people can see them play.
Georgie: thanks for your time.
back in to the main voiceover and music bed.
me:
The new venue is set to be opened in 2012 near the merrion centre but the delayed arrival of this could mean people never get to see their favourite perform if the band split up before then, or if they have a full time job. I interviewd a local record company on how they feel about the new venue.
Play interview
Me: your the manager of the pidgeon detectives, do you think if a bigger venue was built in leeds more bands would play?
manager response.
Me: do you think this venue is big enough and will benefit leeds?
manager response.
back in to music bed and main voice over with final point.
Me:
so we will be getting a new venue, but will it be big enough and will it make more bands play in leeds? i guess we will just have to wait and find out.
Planning: none needed apart from to get my guest at school to interview.
Genre: inform and entertain.
Target audience – age/gender/class/education
local/national- local
Teens or music lovers, both genders, For all classes as a lot of people go see bands/artists, for educated and uneducated, local as its about venues in Leeds.
Purpose – inform/entertain
Primary purpose to inform.
Programme title: why leeds has such small music venues
Details of specific content (plot/discussion topics/facts and stats/ interviews etc)
Vox pops to open, which contain peoples favourite bands.
Then I say some facts on venues and the new Leeds venue.
Interview with kam and Simon on their views.
I say a few more facts before second interview with a record label.
Music – Theme tune/as a bed/sound effects etc
Create my own music bed can only play 6 sec of music by bands/artists. Will use 6 secs over Vox pops upbeat song
Who is in it? What do they do?
Me – I say facts and ask questions.
Kam and simon- in vox pops and interview.
Heather, Claire, doot- vox pops
joof- interview.
Task 9:Carry out the relevant research and document the techniques you have used....(P3, M3, D3)
i have researched many things to enable me to create my speech package.
i did some qualitative research for my vox pops so i could use their voices
this was a first hand account
This was also primary research as i asked people myself and then asked them
to say it for my speech package. I also did some qualitative secondary
research online, to get some facts and figures on venues in leeds:
“The Venue"
Hot Chip Performing on stage at the Leeds Academy
The Venue itself has a large room accommodating 2,300 guests, including a balcony which can hold 500 people.[2] There is also a basement room for gigs by up and coming bands which will
accommodate 400 guests.[1] The Kaiser Chiefs opened the venue with a gig on 8 October 2008[7] with gigs by Foals, Last Shadow Puppets, The Pigeon Detectives,[7] MGMT and Hot Chip following.[2]
On 6 November 2008, it was announced that Telefónica Europe (owners of the O2 Network in the UK) had become the new sponsor of all Academy venues, in a deal with music promotor Live Nation. The deal, which lasts for five years, sees all venues rebranded "The O2 Academy", in line with Telefónica's purchase of the Millenium Dome (now The O2).[8]”
taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_Academy
I also did a mini survey asking 20 people what topics they like and a few other questions. Here are my reasults:
1. What topic do you find the most interesting?
music news sport drama
7 people said music, 4 people said news, 5 said sport and 4 said drama
2. Do you find that proffesional opinions make things more belivable and reliable?
yes no
13 people said yes 7 people said no
3. Does a music bed help set a tone to a speech package?
yes no
10 people said yes 10 people said no.
This primary reasearch helped me choose my topic for my speech package and also helped, by showing me what people liked in speech packages so i could make mine better.
I also did some secondary reasearch, by looking on some websites and reading a few magazines.
I read Kerrang and NME magazines to see where bands were mainly playing in the gig section. This showed me that bigger bands tended to bypass Leeds and play in Manchester or Wembley instead. For example 30 seconds to mars had played at Leeds met the preivous tour, but in this tour were playing no dates in Leeds. i also had a cutting from a newspaper, talking about the new venue. This gave me more information about the new venue and why it was needed.
Here is a list of a few websites i looked at to gain information about venues:

http://www.men-arena.com/about/?page_id=1

Task 10:
Complete the appropriate health and safety paperwork which can be found on....(P3, M3, D3)
Task 12:
Produce a professional sounding speech package using the relevant technology.(P4 M4, D4)
Task 13:
Evaluate your product....(P4, M4, D4)
task 3
Evaluation of my speech package
My original aim was to inform people of Leeds’ new venue and the capacity it will hold, I think that I achieved this as I gave the facts in my package and got peoples opinions on what change they feel the venue will bring if any.
Audience feed back!!
Kam:
Georgies speech package has a great opening and includes some nice effects. The information given contains good facts and stats and a professionals opinion. the package also has a nice music bed which fits well, and the change of music creates a fresh atmosphere and maintains a professional output. i love her ending it closes the speech package and sums up her point. I do think it goes quiet sometimes she needs to sort out her ending sound levels.
Jane:
i liked this speech package as it contained lots of facts and also the music in the Background suited it well. some times the speech went quiet and then it went loud and the second interview used a sound effect that made it hard to hear what was being said. I now think that leeds does need a venue and i hope this new one will be big enough.
both kam and jane are from my primary target audience and both got my preffered reading that Leeds does need a new venue and how important this is.
Representational issues
When I wrote the script for my package I tried not to give positive or negative images as I know that a lot of people go to see bands so my topic could appeal to a lot of different people, signifying how I had to show both sides and not be biased. I included boys and girls in my package to make it suit both genders and ensure that both men and women would listen. Also my target audience contained both men and women, so by using both sexes in my piece it would help them relate more and create a personal identity. My speech package included ethnic minorites in the interview, as again i wanted my target audince to be broad and try and appeal to many people. The speech pakage used language appropriate to the targey audience with the quotes being from people, within my target audience who used informal language to the professional who was formal. I didn't include any swearing as it would be innapropriate and make the speech package seem less formal and the information would seem less reliable. I feel that my piece was done to a proffessional standard, as i used the same techniques, interviews, facts and figures to make my package high quality. i didn't have as much experience or equpitment as a proffessional but i used the same techniques to make my speech package as good as possible.
Technical issues
The sound levels of my piece were a issue as i used two different methods of recording, one being a voice recorder the other being in a radio studio. This meant that some bits were louder than other bits, so i had to sort out the volume and put some recordings in to audiocity. I think that i managed to make my peice sound all the same level by moving volume up and down and applying effects. I made sure that the music bed didnt overpower the speech, as i wanted what was being said to be clear and make an impact on the listener, if the music was too strong the speech would loose its effect. When recording i made sure not to cut anyone off as i knew this would make my production sound less proffessional and more polysemic to the audience. The only problem in recording was the two differnt microphones i used, but i resolved this with sound levels and effects. When i wrote my narrative i made sure there was variety to keep my audience listening, i had facts, figures and interviews to add differnt things and ensure it wasnt just one person talking and possibly loosing the interest of the listener. I managed to edit me piece well as i knew the software i was using (garageband) i had to learn how to work audiocity to make some things louder or quieter. The editing itself was done multi track to ensure i could make some things louder and apply effects where needed. I used a few sound effects on a few voices to make them louder or seem to be done on the phone but i didnt use many, as i didnt need to.
Conventions and narrative
Some things typical to this genre are facts, figures and interviews all of wich i used in my work. This made my package have all the same qualities to a professional product, though i had les time, quality equiptment and no money like they would. My single strand narrative didn't include any hero's or villians as suggested by Propps theory as it wasnt a story and was factual rather than entertaining. The piece opens with an enigma, the vox pops. This was to gain interest and make the audience wonder what all the bands are being named for. The equilibruim was the audeince finding out what the package was on about; music venues.
own performance
i made this speech package by myself, and learnt how to get people to be in my work and to work some new software to edit my piece (Audiocity). I think my strenths were in editing i made my piece fit together and sound quite good. My weakness was in recording as i didnt think to use the same recorder for all my work.
