unit 1 research techniques for the media industries.

content:

What type of programs should you have in your show, and what genre of music?

This can all be effected by the primary and secondary target audience, for a radio station based in a school the primary target audience would be students and the local community. The secondary target audience may be workers in offices or parents at home. This can effect program and music as different people will be listening at different times of the day, for example students will be at school during the day but may tune in at lunch time. Generally modern contemporary music would be played to suit the target audience. For example their would be no point in playing Green day during lunch time if it is not in the charts as the primary target audience will want chart music or music that is high in popularity.

resources:

You will need personnel to help you run the show and create products to go on the programs. Students could be presenters and create content, be producers or be part of the advertisements and marketing team. This would also be beneficial, as this would mean that they do not have to be paid to do this and henceforth save money for licensing. The personnel would

need certain skills, such as communication skills technical skills/editing skills and good time management. station manager, students, production team communication skills, technical skills/editing skills, time management.

costs:

To fund your radio station you will need to get advertisements and create adverts t
o go on the station. This will be used for equipment and the staff who run it wont need to be payed as they will be students at the school. This money would also go towards the licensing aspect of the station. mcps copyright

prs (performing rights) podcast downloads?

ofcom broadcast restricted service license rsl two weeks ten days.

streaming costs prs 60-70 pounds for two weeks.

viability:

The plan to run a school based radio station i feel are quite viable as it means you would have free radio staff and a base for the station so all the costs would be licensing and technology.

placement:

The station would run for two weeks (ten days) during term time, i feel this would be enough time. I would defiantly stream the station online as this is a major contributor to listeners of radio and popular with the younger generation due to their usage of the internet being prominent in todays society;

audience:

The primary target audience will be students at the school then the secondary target audience will be parents of the children who are running the show and family and friends. This will effect what type of music, content and when the programs are aired during the shows.

competitors:

Aside from international radio we will have local radio to compete with & gain listeners from. local/regional radio stations commercial radio stations. To do this we will have to advertise our radio shows to ensure people know about us.

Task 1. You must visit your local council library or university library and find out 3 facts about the population of Pudsey....

I went to the library and then went to reception desk, as i had to join the library. The librarian asked me for my address which i gave to her and then she gave me my card. I then asked if there was any books on the population of Pudsey and she told me to go upstairs. I then went on the computer and checked the reference section to find a book. A book by Edjay Burrow came up and the book was in the geography section on isle L and it was book 914. I went to find the book, which was made by the company Cheltenham and London, i then found the following quote on page 10

Task 2: You must present your information in the following way......

Task 3: You must carry out research, to find out the
following....

  • What radio station is the most listened to radio station in England?

  • How many hours per week does an average person spend listening to the radio?

  • Which 4 regions do Galaxy Radio cover?

What is a restricted service license?

A resrricted service licence is a tempory licence that are usually issued for up to 28 days. This type of licence has a low power (3km) so is usually used for a local station such as a school radio set up for a few weeks. You can get long term RSL's if you are only serving one establishment such as a university campus.

(see foot note)

some examlpes of radio stations running on a restricted service licence are:

Radio RainbowAberdeen Royal Infirmary and

Radio RedhillEast Surrey Hospital.

How much would it cost to purchase a restricted service licence for one month?

It would cost around £345. This is on top of all the other fees which you have to pay such as application fee and royalties.

Application fee of £400 to ofcom.

£40 per day for wireless telegraphy act.

£30 per pay which again goes to ofcom for authority to broadcast.

£31.85 per day paid to PRS for royalties.

£35 pounds per day for the PPL.

£54.53 for MCPS for audience reach of over 100,000

for 28 days the total cost would be ;

Task 4. You must carry out your own research, to find out.....

  • What is the average amount of time per week that people in your school spend listening to the radio?

  • What is the most popular radio station in your school?

  • What is the most popular way of listening to the radio? (Traditional analogue, digital TV, mobile phone, Internet, digital radio, car radio.)
This is some pie charts i got from conducting a survey...

Task 5: You must undertake research to find out...

  • What the future holds for radio?

Terry Wogan's breakfast show was the most listened to radio show in the country as he was was on the radio for over 50 years and was well known and familiar with the audience His show had been running on the BBC for over 38 years but prior to that he had been presenting for 12 years which gives him a total of 50 years of presenting expertise. He became popular due to his familiarity and many people were disappointed when he decided to stop his shows this year.

Being a producer of a radio show gives you a lot of responsibility as you have to plan a lot of content such as: audio content to be put in the broadcasts and choosing music to be played but they have to generate ideas and manage audience response to the program. They also have to work with admin like presenters, D,J's, IT staff, and many more tom ensure the radio programs run smoothly. They also have to deal with commercial/advertising of the program amongst other things.

Being a presenter of a program is a important but fun job to do as you get to talk, play music and talk to people who call in. But there is also a serous side to presenting as you have to learn scripts and have a confident personality to be able to talk clearly and confidently and be understood by the listeners and not be polysemic and confuse the audience. You need to be able to think on your feet in case anything happens and also be able to improvise speech making the job quite stressful. You need to be able to work irregular hours and willing to get involved in creating content and ideas for the shows.

The radio has a lot of competition due to advances in technology. People prefer to listen to music on I-pods, MP3 players where they can chose what to listen to rather than listening to what the presenter or DJ chooses. Also T.V is another major competitor as you can now listen to music on demand or on music channels. All this is popular with the younger generation who have grown up with all this technology especially the internet where you can download and listen to music whilst doing something else. Radio can now be heard on the internet and you can download podcasts to put on your music devices (i-pod etc) a way of trying to gain listeners. The future i feel means the radio will still be listened to as people listen to it, during car trips, whilst cooking or just for entertainment.

Task 6: Conduct research to find out.....

  • Why do people in your school listen to the radio?

  • Why do people listen to their favourite radio show/station? What is it about the programme(s)/presenter(s)/music, which make them listen?

  • What makes a particular station appeal to a certain age group/gender?

  • What is the most popular way of listening to the radio? (Traditional analogue, digital TV, mobile phone, Internet, digital radio, car radio.) Why is this the most popular way of listening to the radio?
see above pie charts.

This is also in my presentation.
